One thing that really confused me more is that there was a product which was for skin lightening, brightening and whitening in order to get clarification i asked the attendant what difference did the three products have, the answer she gave me was wanting so i decided not to purchase the products before i do thorough research.
So on my research i found out the differences as below:
Skin brighteners treat dull complexion by getting rid of dead skin cells and helping your skin renew itself. These could be exfoliants or creams with alpha hydroxyl acids, salicylic acid, vitamins A, C and E, papaya or rice bran.
Skin lighteners are more intense. They’re designed to treat sun damage, acne scars and hyperpigmentation by lightening the skin. Skin lighteners use ingredients like alpha arbutin, licorice root, and Indian gooseberry to inhibit the production of melanin which gives skin it’s color.
Skin whiteners are the most intense and are also potentially dangerous. (These are the treatments that actually bleach your skin.) We suggest steering clear of this category, skin whiteners can include the following ingredients: kojic acid, bearberry extract, mulberry extract, and hydroquinine (which can be especially dangerous when used long-term.)
The verdict: If you’re looking in the mirror and think your skin looks dull, start by adding a gentle exfoliator into your routine. Stick with it before adding anything in the lightening, brightening or whitening family. Promise, k?
