Philip Tunoi tribunal kicks off hearing Tunoi tribunal kicks off hearing

A tribunal formed to investigate Sh200 million bribery claims against suspended Supreme Court judge Philip Tunoi commenced its hearings Tuesday.

Mr Geoffrey Kiplagat, who filed an affidavit claiming that he facilitated payment of the bribe to the judge was cross examined by Justice Tunoi’s lawyer Fred Ngatia.

Through his lawyer, Justice Tunoi described allegations that he received the bribe as “a fiction, a thriller and irritating thing” which did not take place.

Mr Kiplagat, a former journalist, said that the judge failed to turn up for various meetings which he had arranged with Dr Kidero’s point men.

He however said he met the Judge in his chambers in Nairobi.

The witness also confirmed that he recorded the affidavit in 2014 before it came to light last year.

The tribunal, chaired by the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board Chairman Sharad Rao, is conducting the hearing at Anniversary Towers.

Other tribunal members are Justice Roseline Korir, retired judge Jonathan Havelock and lawyers Judith Guserwa, Mr James Kaberere Gacoka, Mr Abdirashid Abdullahi Hussein and Mr George Munji Wakukha.

The tribunal will investigate claims that Justice Tunoi received a Sh202 million bribe from Dr Kidero to influence an election petition filed against him by the current Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu.
